Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won the 2023 Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit on Sunday. Sergio Perez’s team-mate and reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished second, but retained the lead in the drivers’ championship after securing the fastest lap of the race on the 50th and last lap. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso finished third, but face a post-race penalty and therefore dropped outside the podium. The result in Jeddah was Red Bull’s second one-two in as many races this season but a reverse of the March 5 opener in Bahrain.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished in sixth place, with his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc seventh on a very disappointing Sunday afternoon, which was made even more difficult due to a Safety Car that was deployed just a few laps after both Ferrari drivers pitted, allowing their opponents to take a free pit stop.
Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur shared his first impressions following the poor result and performance in the 2023 Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit:
Without the Safety Car maybe you could have beaten Mercedes?
Frederic Vasseur: “Well if, without, maybe … I don’t race like that! We are behind and it’s up to us to understand why and to work on it..”

Can the Ferrari boss be satisfied with how things went in the 2023 Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix:
Frederic Vasseur: “Satisfied? Not at all. Yesterday our pace wasn’t bad, I think we were ahead of Aston Martin and Mercedes and today it was not the case, we need to understand why we lost so much.. At the beginning of the race, I would say it wasn’t that bad especially for Charles who gained some positions but with the hard tyres everything fell apart. We need to understand what’s wrong with those hard tyres but let’s be clear I am not criticising the tyres, it’s us who don’t know how to make them work..”
