Fred Vasseur, in a recent interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, discussed Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, not holding back some criticism.
Is he satisfied with his drivers?
“You can always do better, as a team and also as drivers – Ferrari Team Principal stated in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport -. Charles didn’t expect a season like this and at the beginning, he pushed harder than necessary; now he seems to have better assimilated the situation. Carlos is very consistent, and for this reason, he’s a good reference for us. In terms of character, Leclerc is impulsive; if something goes wrong, he doesn’t hold back. However, for his own good and for the team, sometimes it’s better to calm down before speaking. In the heat of the moment, you don’t have all the necessary information to form a final judgment, and in front of an open microphone, it’s better to take your time. He’s always very fast, but this year, when you look at the qualifiers, Carlos has been more on par than in the past.” – the French manager explained for the Italian media.
The message is quite clear: Charles Leclerc still needs to grow, both in on-track performance and, especially, “off-track,” meaning in communications with the outside world. Regarding Carlos Sainz, the words are generally positive, even though he might then be “sacrificed” if a World Champion of the caliber of Lewis Hamilton were to succumb to the allure of Maranello’s Red team.
