Scuderia Ferrari arrives at Monza for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix with significant updates to the SF-24’s floor. The new design changes many aspects and should no longer cause the troublesome bouncing.
The new floor is part of the upgrade package brought to the Monza circuit. The Maranello car also features a new low-drag rear wing. The front wing is also new but was already brought to Belgium, although it wasn’t used. The core of the updates prepared by Ferrari’s engineers is the floor itself. After the upgrades in Barcelona, which introduced the bouncing that cost so much in terms of performance, Ferrari has worked extensively on this area of the car.
The first corrective measures were introduced at the Hungaroring circuit in Hungary. However, these were “emergency” interventions to slightly modify the rear geometry of the channels and reduce the bouncing.
The Monza version, however, is a completely new design, changed in many fundamental aspects for the car’s performance. Ferrari began working on it in parallel with the package brought to Barcelona. According to what was learned from the Italian website f1ingenerale, the personnel working on the development of this floor have also changed.
Significant changes
Ferrari has made several modifications to the floor debuting at Monza. These changes are not so much in the entry of the Venturi channels, but rather in the development of the channels themselves and the external floor edge.
The shape of the Venturi channels has been modified, as well as the fences. This is to change the pressure distribution, and therefore the downforce, under the car and the vortex structure.
The front part of the floor edge has also been revised. This area is now lower than in the previous version and creates a greater “separation” from the rear part. The shape and position of the metal supports have also changed, as has the external “blade.” This indicates that Ferrari is seeking a very different flow management in that area, probably for a better pneumatic seal.
There are also significant updates in the diffuser area, to change the expansion and pressure recovery, as well as in the keel. In short, it’s a floor completely revised in every aspect, and there seems to be quite a bit of confidence in it.
From what we’ve learned, the new Monza floor will be very important for Ferrari. This design is also conceived with an eye towards 2025. The floor of next season’s Ferrari F1 car should therefore be a further evolution of what we’ll see this weekend. It will be crucial for the Maranello team to get positive feedback from the track, starting with the first free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix.
