For the Canadian Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, several teams have brought updates. For the most part, they are small adjustments, as seen with Red Bull and Mercedes, which, however, could still make a big difference. The only team that has showcased an almost new car is Aston Martin, which has followed a very extreme philosophy, as highlighted by Motorsport F1 expert Giorgio Piola.
Scuderia Ferrari, on the other hand, hasn’t brought any changes, as their current plan is to identify the critical points of the SF-23 Evo and then begin development from there. For now, the engineers in Maranello have already identified a problem that compromised the performance of the drivers in Spain. This was stated by Franco Nugnes, Editor in chief of Motorsport.com Italy, in a video for the Motorsport website, where he also defended the choice of the Scuderia: “We expected some small updates, but there have been zero modifications. The solution is logical considering the porpoising issue that emerged on the SF-23 Evo in Barcelona.” – he pointed out.
“Based on the rumors we’ve heard, in Maranello, they want to address the bouncing issue first before tackling the development problem. There was talk of a 3 to 4-tenths advantage in the wind tunnel, but it wasn’t seen at Montmelo, so they have to go back to square one,” added the journalist. Furthermore, the difficulties with this car have already emerged from the early days here in Canada, as both drivers have had a new Power Unit fitted. “The anomaly is that Ferrari has already used up their third engine, which is strange in such a long season,” concluded the director in view of the Montreal weekend.
“Ferrari had a weaning problem”
Giorgio Piola echoed his words and appeared more hopeful. According to the expert, the Ferrari updates didn’t work well at the last Grand Prix because there was a lack of experience mileage. “I believe there was a ‘weaning’ problem for the new car at the Barcelona circuit, something that Mercedes had already partially done in Monaco. I hope the tests have served their purpose, although we will only get the answer later on,” emphasized Formula 1 expert Giorgio Piola, ahead of the qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix.
