Ferrari and Red Bull push FIA for new Mercedes investigation over controversial F1 engine. Ferrari hopes new FIA checks could slow Mercedes domination.

The controversy surrounding Mercedes’ dominant Formula 1 power unit may be far from over. Despite recent FIA interventions aimed at clarifying the legality of current engine designs, reports emerging from the paddock suggest the governing body could introduce an additional round of stricter inspections after the mandatory summer shutdown.

Mercedes has established itself as the clear benchmark of the 2026 Formula 1 season from a power unit perspective. The German manufacturer’s superiority has played a decisive role in the Silver Arrows winning all five Grands Prix so far, alongside two victories from the opening three Sprint races.

While Red Bull is generally viewed as the closest challenger, Ferrari continues suffering from a significant horsepower deficit that has increasingly become a source of frustration inside Maranello.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have repeatedly managed to maximize the potential of Ferrari’s SF-26 chassis, but the power disadvantage relative to Mercedes-powered teams remains clearly visible on circuits where straight-line speed and energy deployment efficiency are crucial.

Mercedes engine already under suspicion before the season began

The debate surrounding Mercedes’ engine advantage actually started before the opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Several rival teams reportedly questioned whether Mercedes had found a way to exploit a grey area in the regulations linked to the maximum permitted fuel compression ratio of 16:1.

According to speculation circulating throughout the paddock during the winter, Mercedes may have developed a highly sophisticated combustion solution involving fuel behavior under operating temperatures. The alleged system could theoretically unlock additional horsepower while remaining extremely difficult to detect under standard FIA testing procedures.

The concern among rival manufacturers was that Mercedes engines might operate beyond the permitted compression threshold while on track, only returning within legal parameters once cooled for post-session inspections.

Ferrari has reportedly been one of the most vocal teams pushing for further FIA intervention, despite public confidence displayed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

The FIA already reacted once before Monaco

In response to the growing suspicions, the FIA introduced an important modification to its engine inspection procedures starting from the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.

Instead of allowing power units to cool naturally before analysis, Formula 1 engines are now tested under hot operating conditions. The new process is specifically designed to eliminate any possible loopholes linked to thermal expansion or temperature-related fuel behavior.

According to reports from Italy, Mercedes engineers remain fully confident that the revised Monaco directive will not significantly reduce the manufacturer’s performance advantage.

In fact, several reports suggest Mercedes had already internally validated its power unit against the FIA’s updated testing procedures months earlier, meaning no hardware modifications were necessary before the rule adjustment officially came into force.

That confidence has only intensified frustration among rival teams, particularly Ferrari, which continues struggling to close the gap in outright engine performance.

New FIA inspections could arrive after summer shutdown

Now, however, fresh rumours indicate the FIA may not be satisfied with the current level of oversight.

According to reports circulating in the paddock, Formula 1’s governing body could introduce an even more aggressive inspection programme following the mandatory August factory shutdown.

While details remain unclear and no official confirmation has yet been provided, the potential new measures are believed to involve even deeper technical analysis of power unit operating behavior under race conditions.

Such a scenario could create significant pressure for Mercedes because teams are required to close their factories for two weeks during the summer break. If any design modifications become necessary, manufacturers would need clarity from the FIA very quickly in order to prepare updated solutions before operations are temporarily suspended.

For Mercedes, the stakes are enormous. The current power unit advantage represents one of the biggest foundations behind the team’s dominance in both qualifying and race trim throughout the 2026 campaign.

Ferrari and Red Bull still chasing Mercedes

Even if the FIA’s stricter monitoring eventually changes little in practical terms, Ferrari and Red Bull are expected to continue applying political pressure behind the scenes. The biggest question now is whether any intervention would arrive too late to genuinely reshape the championship battle.

Charles Leclerc currently trails championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 56 points in the Drivers’ Championship, while Ferrari sits 72 points behind Mercedes in the Constructors’ standings.

Lewis Hamilton has shown increasing competitiveness in recent races, especially after Ferrari improved the operational environment around the seven-time world champion. However, even strong performances from Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have not fully compensated for the engine deficit on faster circuits.

Red Bull also remains within striking distance thanks largely to Max Verstappen’s extraordinary consistency, but many inside the paddock believe Mercedes currently possesses the most complete overall package in Formula 1.

The controversy may continue deep into the season

Even if the Monaco directive failed to noticeably alter the competitive order, few believe the discussion surrounding Mercedes’ power unit will disappear anytime soon. The combination of Ferrari’s continued complaints, the FIA’s evolving inspection procedures and Mercedes’ overwhelming straight-line performance ensures the issue will remain one of the dominant technical storylines of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Whether the governing body eventually uncovers anything substantial — or whether Mercedes simply remains ahead through superior engineering — could play a decisive role in shaping the remainder of the championship fight.
