Despite the fact that finalizing the regulations regarding the engines that will be installed on the Formula 1 cars starting from the 2026 season is considered imminent, Mercedes have expressed some concerns about possible delays due to misunderstandings or last-minute doubts that could postpone an agreement of the new rules for a few more months.
Regulations 2026: Mercedes fears delays
An approval of the new rules for 2026 engines was expected by the end of June, which is now ending and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, interviewed by Autosport, did not hide a certain fear that something bad or unpleasant will happen: “We are eagerly awaiting the regulations to be officially approved. We want to get on with the work needed to prepare for the new engines. However, I also believe that they must be drafted in the most appropriate way. This is why I have faith in the work carried out by the FIA.” – he explained.
“I believe that it will not be easy for new and old engine manufacturers to design a power unit according to such a detailed plan. I just hope that there are no excessive delays and that we can have a regulation ready by the summer so that we can start working on it in the fall. Having them for September, for example, would be great.” – added the Mercedes team principal.
Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto agrees with his counterpart, but believes there are no reasons to be worried, as he points to the upcoming meetings of the top FIA and F1 leaders, saying: “I don’t think there will be any delays. We have not received any information that the vote will be postponed. A new meeting will take place by the end of June and then the F1 Commission will also meet in Austria. Let’s proceed step by step “. – Mattia Binotto explained.

With meetings that for obvious reasons cannot be interspersed with limited time spans from each other, there are also many points of discussion on the agenda. Among these, in addition to the 2026 power unit regulations, the next meetings should also find a solution to reduce excessive bouncing and the measures to be taken regarding the budget cap.
