Through an official note, following the failure to obtain the certificate of suitability relating to compliance with the budget cap for the 2021 Formula One season, Red Bull declared itself “surprised and disappointed” and “ready to evaluate all the options” at its disposal.
An apparently conflicting reaction against the FIA that could simply be a facade operation and then instead agree to follow the path of a plea bargain with the Federation, a way out that would prevent Red Bull from being judged by a board which would also include five members of other nine teams taking part in the Formula 1 championship.
The plea bargain obviously means that Red Bull would admit to having violated the budget cap rules in an official and clearly defined way, thus excluding any possibility of damaging its reputation in a risky appeal. The path of the agreement with the Federation will surely trigger harsh protests of the opponents, Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes above all.
It is no coincidence that in Singapore Toto Wolff had already pointed out that he is ready to spend more money than is available if Red Bull gets away with just a fine. Today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere dello Sport reports this possible scenario: “If Red Bull exceeded the budget by less than two million, they could close the matter by paying five times that amount, therefore a total of ten million. And in any case it would not be fair because it would grant the right to cheat by paying for a way out. Mercedes have already talked about it and, if this were really the penalty imposed by the FIA, Mercedes is ready to plan extra budget and a related fine to recover performance and return to the top in 2023.” – Corriere dello Sport wrote.
