Although the Formula 1 championship battle is increasingly being defined by the competitive order on track, discussions away from the circuit remain dominated by one familiar subject: the future of Max Verstappen. The reigning four-time world champion continues to be regarded as the most valuable asset on the F1 driver market, and despite being under contract with Red Bull through the end of the 2028 season, rumors about a potential move refuse to fade. As often happens whenever speculation intensifies, Scuderia Ferrari has once again found itself drawn into the conversation.
Questions surrounding Red Bull’s long-term competitiveness have only added fuel to the debate. The RB22 has struggled to consistently match its main rivals throughout the season, while reliability concerns and significant personnel changes within the team have led many observers to wonder whether Max Verstappen could eventually seek a fresh challenge elsewhere. One of the most notable developments has been the departure of long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, whose move to McLaren has inevitably generated further discussion about Red Bull’s future direction.
Despite the growing speculation, the leading teams repeatedly linked with the Dutch driver have continued to publicly dismiss the possibility of pursuing him. Mercedes and McLaren have both been mentioned as potential destinations over recent months, yet neither organization has shown any indication that negotiations are underway.
McLaren and Mercedes maintain confidence in their current driver pairings
During the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, McLaren CEO Zak Brown downplayed suggestions that the Woking-based team could target Max Verstappen. Rather than encouraging the rumors, Brown jokingly suggested that only an extraordinary and highly unlikely scenario involving either Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris would even create a vacancy, implying that both current drivers remain fully committed to McLaren’s long-term project.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has delivered a similarly consistent message throughout the season. Instead of entertaining speculation surrounding Max Verstappen, Wolff has repeatedly emphasized his confidence in George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, explaining that Mercedes believes it already possesses one of the strongest driver lineups in Formula 1. According to the Austrian executive, the impressive performances shown by both drivers have reinforced the team’s belief that its current strategy is the correct one for both the present and the future.
Bernie Ecclestone revives Ferrari speculation with surprising revelation
While current team bosses have attempted to cool the rumors, former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has taken a very different position. In his assessment, Max Verstappen remains the one driver capable of transforming a team’s fortunes almost regardless of the machinery at his disposal, making him the most valuable signing available anywhere in the sport.
Ecclestone reportedly argued that, if he were running a Formula 1 team today, securing Max Verstappen’s signature would be a higher priority than focusing exclusively on car development. He also revealed that the Dutch driver had reportedly been advised last season to consider a move to Ferrari, a claim that has once again reignited debate over whether the Scuderia could one day attempt to bring the reigning world champion to Maranello.
Ferrari remains committed to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc
Despite the renewed speculation, there is currently little evidence to suggest that Maranello is preparing to alter its long-term driver plans. The Italian team has invested heavily in assembling one of the strongest lineups on the Formula 1 grid, pairing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton with Charles Leclerc as it pursues future championship success.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are viewed as central figures in Ferrari’s long-term project, and there have been no concrete indications from Maranello that the Scuderia is considering replacing either driver. Nevertheless, whenever the Formula 1 transfer market begins to gather momentum, Max Verstappen’s name almost inevitably becomes linked with Ferrari due to the prestige of the team and the Dutchman’s status as the benchmark driver of the current generation.
With most leading teams already tied to long-term driver contracts and several organizations committed to ambitious multi-year projects, an immediate blockbuster transfer appears unlikely. Even so, Formula 1 has repeatedly shown that unexpected opportunities can emerge very quickly, especially when competitive cycles begin to shift.
For now, Max Verstappen remains at the center of virtually every major driver market discussion. Whether or not any of the speculation eventually develops into genuine negotiations, his future continues to shape conversations throughout the paddock, with Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren all repeatedly finding themselves mentioned whenever Formula 1’s biggest transfer rumors begin to circulate.
