Ferrari can wait on Hamilton’s future: no rush for a new deal
The Monaco Grand Prix weekend is building anticipation for Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton, both eager to capitalize on the unique characteristics of the iconic street circuit in an attempt to challenge the front-runners. The race in the Principality represents a crucial moment for the ambitions of the Maranello-based team. Beyond the purely engineering aspects, Hamilton has also shared some interesting thoughts on the current Formula 1 landscape.
Ferrari optimism grows as the SF-26 continues to improve
Initial assessments ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix paint an encouraging picture for Ferrari, reflecting the confidence currently felt within the team’s garage. The tight and twisty nature of the Monte Carlo circuit appears to suit the characteristics of the SF-26. The lack of long straights, which tend to expose some of the aerodynamic weaknesses seen at other venues, helps reduce the performance gap.
In Monaco, outright power from the power unit plays a far less important role than at many other tracks, while traction and low-speed cornering performance become critical. These are areas where Ferrari has shown particularly strong characteristics. Despite the recent upgrades introduced by rival teams, there is genuine belief that the Scuderia can fight on equal terms for victory this weekend.
This renewed competitiveness is not an isolated occurrence but rather the result of continuous and often unseen work carried out behind the scenes. The foundations required to perform at a high level were already present in Maranello, but they needed to be strengthened through a more refined working methodology in order to unlock the car’s full potential. This is one of the key points Lewis Hamilton highlighted when speaking more generally about Ferrari’s progress.
Lewis Hamilton’s work behind Ferrari’s progress
The effort invested in guiding the car’s technical development is now beginning to deliver significant benefits. Those gains are reflected in a baseline setup that has been described as considerably stronger than during some disappointing periods in the past.
The suspension modifications requested and planned from the very first testing sessions have now been fully integrated into the SF-26. This serves as clear evidence of a collaborative approach aimed at definitively steering the project in the right direction.
From an aerodynamic perspective, Monaco presents a unique challenge. While the circuit demands maximum downforce, the current regulations impose significantly lower levels of aerodynamic load compared to previous generations of Formula 1 cars.
As a result, Ferrari is expected to display some unusual dynamic characteristics, with the car likely feeling more “floaty” than fans might remember from past eras. Even so, the famous corner leading into the tunnel should still be taken flat out, without drivers needing to lift off the throttle.
Lewis Hamilton: contract talks can wait
The process of refining a Formula 1 car inevitably relies on building a close relationship between the driver and the engineers. Translating complex driving sensations into precise engineering data requires patience, trust and a deep mutual understanding, particularly when analysing every aspect of the car’s balance through each phase of a corner.
From turn-in to mid-corner and all the way through to the apex and exit, understanding the car’s behaviour in detail remains at the heart of the development process.
Alongside celebrating the successful professional relationships he has built throughout his career, Lewis Hamilton also expressed enormous respect for Ferrari’s current technical staff. He praised the dedication of the engineers, describing them as highly skilled professionals capable of handling pressure and skepticism while continuing to work with complete commitment.
Meanwhile, away from the track, the Briton’s contractual situation appears to be on hold for the time being. Despite Charles Leclerc recently extending his commitment to Ferrari with a new agreement, a future contract renewal involving Lewis Hamilton is not currently among the British driver’s immediate priorities.
For now, Lewis Hamilton’s focus remains entirely on performance and on helping Ferrari maximize its results during the current championship campaign. There will be time to discuss the future later.
