As was anticipated this morning by the Italian media, Suderia Ferrari introduced a new rear wing with maximum downforce in Barcelona. The Maranello technicians have developed the solution for the next round of the 2021 Formula 1 season, the Monaco Grand Prix, but it will be tested in free practice at the Spanish GP and, almost certainly, it will also be used during the Montmelò weekend.
The Catalan track has always been a medium-high downforce track, but with the intervention of the FIA rules that cut the floor, limiting the height of the vertical bulkheads under the extractor and reduced the fins of the rear brake duct, it is legitimate to think that teams try to make up for the lack of vertical thrust through the ailerons.
On the SF21 that was seen Thursday in Barcelona there is a rear wing with a long rope main profile and a flap mounted at almost ninety degrees and with a conspicuous nolder.
The moving wing is characterized by a minimum central V, to ensure maximum downforce, but with the use of the DRS on the straight it will be possible to significantly reduce the drag, improving the maximum speeds at speed trap.
Ferrari also adopts the double T-wing.
