Scuderia Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto confiremd that the Italian side agrees with the recent request made by Formula 1 to host six Sprint events in the next championship, despite the fact that last season, Ferrari was one the the teams in opposition to Formula 1’s intentions of running the sprint at six races during the current campaign, just like Mercedes and Red Bull.
The explanation at that moment focused on costs, especially taking into consideration the budget cap which for 2022 has been reduced by $5million as compared to the previous season, and with the teams focusing on the new aerodynamic regulations.
With this in mind, Formula 1 decided to keep just three Sprint events for the 2022 championship, but managing director motorsports Ross Brawn wants to see six sprint events on next year’s calendar. At an F1 Commission meeting which takes place in London on Tuesday, a vote is due to be taken, with the Maranello team now supportive of the idea.
“It [six sprints] is one of the points we will discuss for next year during the F1 Commission [meeting],” Mattia Binotto explained – “It is on the agenda, and it is the intention to run six sprint events. We are in favour because it will give better opportunities for the show and the revenues, so it’s right to support. In terms of costs, it has been discussed, the cost cap, the revenues, what may be worthwhile.” – he added.
Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, meanwhile, believe it would be better for the sprint event to also becomes a standalone race rather than continuing with its current format of deciding the grid for Sunday’s main event. At present, qualifying takes place on Friday evening: this sets the grid for the sprint race on Saturday, with the result of that event then setting the grid for Sunday’s race.

Asked to comment on the idea from Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sanz, Mattia Binotto replied: “In terms of format, that’s a different matter. First we are supportive in increasing to six, and then we can review the format. As we’ve said in the past, we have some experience on the sprint race format, and on the current format there are some ideas, so that will be discussed, and let’s see what comes out.” – the Ferrari boss concluded.
