    Sorry, but this article is the biggest nonsense I have ever read. Even if flexible, elastic deformation-utilizing triangular wishbones have a few advantages, the disadvantages are extremely serious, and in fact, the advantages mentioned in the article are complete nonsense, because in reality, the opposite is true. The advantages are lower complexity and fewer joints. This means fewer moving parts, as no additional ball joints are required, resulting in fewer sources of wear.

    Fewer components often also means less maintenance and lower susceptibility to faults. This results in weight savings due to

    the elimination of heavy joints, fasteners, and seals, thus reducing unsprung masses overall. Lower unsprung masses theoretically improve response, traction, and damping. However, this is not the case here, as there are disadvantages that have the opposite effect, which I will discuss later. 

    Progressive forces can be built up through specifically dimensioned flex zones (akin to a “soft” introduction, ending in a stiffer finish). This can help to handle load changes more smoothly and in a more controlled manner.

    A reduced overall height/space advantages would be another benefit because large fork heads or external joints allow the control arm to be built more compactly, which means more space for aerodynamics, cooling, and steering. There would potentially be less friction because elastic deformation does not have rolling/sliding friction like ball joints, resulting in more direct, consistent response behavior.

    However, there are significant disadvantages—wear and material fatigue. Elastic components fatigue under repeated stress, and their service life is limited. Cracks develop and stiffness changes or, in the worst case, breakage occurs, which is critical in racing. Temperature and material dependence. Elastomer components can change their properties due to heat (braking, environment), leading to inconsistent performance.  

    Adjustability becomes more difficult. Hard bearings/ball joints can be adjusted precisely (camber, caster, etc.). Flexible control arms often have fewer fine adjustment options. And now for the most important point—changes in control arm stiffness simultaneously change several driving dynamics parameters.

    The suspension geometry changes unintentionally depending on the load. In racing, however, it is precisely this geometry that is crucial for grip, stability, and feedback. So it is by no means the case that advantages arise here as mentioned in the article (there are good reasons why racing cars want suspensions that are as STIFF as possible). 

    Elasticity leads to uncontrolled camber loss. This is particularly true for upper control arms, which have a significant influence on camber. 

    When it bends under lateral forces, the upper ball point moves outward or upward. This results in less negative camber, which is particularly critical in fast corners. This leads to a reduced tire contact patch and overheating of the outer tire shoulder. You have cornering grip exactly where you need it. 

    The next factor is caster. The problem: dynamic caster loss

    When braking or cornering, longitudinal and lateral forces act simultaneously. A bending upper control arm shifts the upper pivot point. This reduces the effective caster.

    Elasticity in the control arm or bearings causes further unwanted geometric changes under load:

    Braking: Control arms are pulled backward, which can cause the track to change toward toe-out or toe-in. Conversely, acceleration causes the control arm to be pushed forward, resulting in the opposite track change. 

    Lateral forces (cornering) cause the camber to change uncontrollably. The result: inconsistent tire contact, which is particularly critical with slicks such as those used in F1.

    All of this results in imprecise handling and poorer feedback.
    And in racing, driver feedback is crucial:

    Flexible control arms filter forces

    Steering wheel feels “soft” or sluggish

    Limits more difficult to assess

    Particularly problematic in:

    High-speed corners

    Steering-in phase

    Load changes

    Instability when braking

    During hard braking:

    Control arms give way → dynamic change in track

    Different compliance on the left/right → pulling of the vehicle

    Changed caster angle → less straight-line stability

    The result:

    Unstable rear end

    Brakes work less efficiently

    Longer braking distances possible

    In addition, the opposite occurs – loss of traction when accelerating

    Elastic control arms change the anti-squat geometry, the wheel position changes, and the tires slip earlier – again negatively affecting tire wear and temperature.

    Particularly critical with rear-wheel drive.

    Setup difficult to reproduce

    Vehicle reacts differently depending on load conditions.

    Less direct feedback when exiting corners uncleanly.
    Elastic deformation “absorbs” some of the forces → the driver receives less direct feedback about ground contact or limits.

    More difficult to predict behavior
    Nonlinear systems (material elongation, viscoelastic damping) are more difficult to model → more complex simulations.

    So sorry, but this article is completely wrong on pretty much every single point and reveals a total lack of understanding of suspension and vehicle dynamics!
