After Honda and Mercedes, Ferrari is also expected to see an increase in performance linked to the introduction of a new power unit as compared to the one with which Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz started the 2021 Formula One championship in Sakhir back in March. In terms of components and structure, the power units used during this championship must be identical by regulation, but Honda and Mercedes have taught that in terms of reliability and fuel there is room for improvement, highlighted by Honda in France at Le Castellet when Max Verstappen started using the second engine of the three allowed by the regulation. Mercedes, too, thanks to greater guarantees in terms of reliability, unleashed more power starting from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, which could be seen on track as they were faster than Red Bull.
Ferrari will introduce power unit number three after the Italian Grand Prix in Monza and, like the aforementioned competitors, there is no shortage of expectations about an increase in performance from the engine built in Maranello. According to what is reported by today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, about 10 more hp are expected thanks to the optimization of the ERS use methods, in terms of energy available over the entire lap. In addition, the supplier Shell has developed new fuel and lubricants that will be used alongside the new and improved power unit.
Charles Leclerc, who was hit and taken out by the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll at the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix, will most likely be destined to serve a penalty on the starting grid due to the use of an additional engine compared to the three provided for by the regulation, a prospect that also involves Max Verstappen. Being able to count on a more performing engine when he has to recover will be important for the Monegasque driver and for Scuderia Ferrari, who will be fighting for third place in the constructors’ standings with McLaren, as both teams are currently on qual points, ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
