Fernando Alonso once again makes fun of Ferrari after the qualifying session for the 2024 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, which was held at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on Saturday. The Spaniard, sixth on the grid with his Aston Martin, does not hide a certain satisfaction. The goal must be to score points in a season that seems far from the amazing 2023 that had made fans and Fernando Alonso himself dream.
In Montreal, a rather atypical qualifying session took place. The weather and track surface conditions, characterized by very low temperatures, mixed up the field and compacted the group. Both Red Bull and Ferrari seemed to struggle in Q1 (with Sergio Perez eliminated) and in Q2 (with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc eliminated). Once again, only Max Verstappen carried the team.
Things could change again in the race, with unstable weather, a high risk of rain, and the Safety Car variable. However, the Canadian Grand Prix will be a great opportunity for those seeking redemption, like Daniel Ricciardo and Fernando Alonso himself.
“It was difficult because we made a lot of changes from FP3 to qualifying,” the Spaniard explained to Marca. “We took some risks in terms of setup, and qualifying was difficult because it rained, then stopped raining, and you never knew what condition the track was in.” With a few small adjustments, Fernando Alonso adds, pole position would have been possible.
After the Free Practice problems, the Aston Martin driver takes another jab at Ferrari: “But we are in front of strong people, right? Ahead of Sergio Pérez, ahead of the two Ferrari cars, who had suddenly won the Championship in Monaco. So we are trying to do our best, but the road is still long, and today’s two-tenths [from pole] hurt a bit more.”
