Autodromo do Algarve Portimao circuit information
The Autodromo do Algarve circuit in Portimao, Portugal opened in 2008.
A group of Formula 1 teams tested at the track shortly after it opened, and returned again in 2009. However as the championship introduced strict limits on testing from 2009, no teams returned to the track for more than a decade.
That changed when the 2020 F1 calendar was heavily disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As the sport was forced to reorganise its schedule and find replacements for many cancelled races, the Algarve venue was chosen for a race in October.
That meant that last season Portugal made its return to the Formula 1 world championship for the first time since the 1996 Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril. Now Portimao returns on the 2021 F1 calendar for the third round of the season.
LOCATION
Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is located near Portimão at Sítio do Escampadinho in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, roughly 4.5 km north of the A22 motorway, which has a direct road link from the exit at Mexilhoeira Grande. The circuit is just a 15 minute drive from the cities of Portimão and Lagos.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Given the various layouts of the track, FIA Slow Fast (F1) version is considered the standard version.
