The FIA has confirmed the areas where it will be possible to use the drag reduction system (DRS) in the next race of the 2022 Formula 1 season, the Austrian Grand Prix, the 11th round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship.
After the first career victory secured by Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz at the Silverstone circuit last weekend and the controversy over the strategy taken by the Maranello team with Charles Leclerc’s car, as the Monegasque finished the British Grand Prix only in fourth place, the sport is ready to head to Austria, at the 4.318-kilometre Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
The race commission, has chosen to activate three DRS zones for the Austrian weekend, which will be positioned in the main straight of the Red Bull Ring circuit, in the straight leading from turns 1 to 3 (in the middle there is the half-corner 2) and in the opposite line which leads the drivers from Turns 3 to 4. The detection points, one for each sector, will be placed just before the turns 10, 1 and 3.
The weekend program, we recall, totally changes the format compared to the “standard” one: the first session of free practice is scheduled for Friday at 13.30 (local hour), while the qualifying session will take place on the same afternoon at 17.00. On Saturday morning at 12.30 the drivers will have the opportunity to run for another free practice session before the “Sprint Race” at 16.30. Sunday, at 2.00 pm, the start of the main event, the Austrian Grand Prix.
