Formula One managing director of motorsports and technical director Ross Brawn reflects on Scuderia Ferrari’s 2019 Formula One season at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: “One should certainly have expected more from Ferrari, they had a season full of highs and lows.” – said Ross Brawn, who from 1997 to 2006 was technical and then team boss of Ferrari.
“At the winter test in Spain everything looked so promising, but in spring the optimism disappeared and disappointment made way. After all, the Ferrari World Championship season is a collection of missed opportunities.” – the F1 technical boss said in his review of the Abu Dhabi GP.
“In the first part of the season Mercedes dominated, but after the summer break we experienced another Ferrari with six consecutive pole positions from Belgium to Mexico. Ferrari also won three times in a row, with Charles Leclerc’s triumph at Monza as the highlight. This summer high was followed by more difficult races, such as the Abu Dhabi finale” – he added – “In his first year as Team Principal Mattia Binotto has undergone a baptism of fire in what is probably the most highly-pressured role in Formula 1. I am sure, though, that he has all the qualities to kick-start another winning cycle. Next year it will be an interesting challenge for both drivers and Mattia will have to carefully manage his driver pairing to best suit the needs of the team. Now the biggest task of all will be to give Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc a competitive car on any type of circuit. Ferrari will also have to deal with stability problems. On top of that, they will have to try and avoid the reliability issues that occurred too frequently this year.” – concludes Ross Brawn.
