Last evening, at a meeting of the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council in Paris, several important changes to the Formula 1 sporting and technical rules were decided.
Taking into consideration the reliability problems that several teams faced in the first part of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, it was decided that the regulation regarding the current engine limits would be changed. First of all, Formula 1 teams will be permitted to change engines under parc ferme conditions for newer versions which have been put into their pool.
Until now, any such swap of specification of a car part which is changed in parc ferme meant the car would have to start the race from the pitlane. This change will be particularly useful for drivers that have several components available in their engine pool and have introduced upgraded parts.
At the same time, the FIA has introduced a provision to the regulation in order to allow temporary repairs of engines. There are also talks about the future of the 2026 power unit rules, but these were not officially finalized and discussions will continue in the next few weeks, as Audi and Porsche are waiting to see the final version of rules before confirming their entries in Formula 1.
There were also other topics of discussion: after the intrigue caused by the different specification floors which Scuderia Ferrari used during a Pirelli tyre testing session at the Imola circuit earlier this season, the rules regarding car limitations for tyre testing have been changes, while deflection tests to check on the flexibility of rear wings and beam wings have been updated.

The FIA also confirmed changes related to the schedule of media activities at Formula 1 weekends, with the preview events now returning to Thursdays and not on Fridays as has been the case in this first part of the 2022 championship. The initial idea was to reduce the need for staff to be at the circuit before the first day of track action, but did not achieve its goal and as a result the media activities will once again take place on Thursday.
