Lap 50 out of 53: at the Suzuka circuit in the 2023 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari number 55 is battling with the two Silver Arrows for fifth place. Mercedes’ defensive strategy sparks irony from Carlos Sainz, who, in a team radio message, jokingly asks for the “copyright” from his rivals.
With three laps to go in the Grand Prix, the situation is as follows: George Russell is in fifth, Lewis Hamilton in sixth, and Carlos Sainz in seventh place. The Spanish driver from the Prancing Horse is right on the tail of the seven-time Formula 1 champion, but he can’t find a way to overtake.
So, from the Ferrari pit wall, they advise George Russell to give up his position to Lewis Hamilton, who, unlike his teammate, has the tire condition and pace to defend the position. George concedes the place to Lewis, and then a playful exchange unfolds.
Mercedes has indeed asked Lewis Hamilton to grant DRS (Drag Reduction System) to George Russell, so he can fend off Carlos Sainz.
Mercedes’ strategy in the pit wall amuses Carlos Sainz in a team radio message in Japan: “They are using my trick against me!” he exclaims in jest, referring to a defensive tactic used by the Ferrari man in Singapore last weekend, when the Spaniard won at the Maina Bay street circuit.
Riccardo Adami, Ferrari’s race engineer, responds regarding Carlos Sainz’s pass on George Russell: “A classic overtake, well done.” Carlos Sainz immediately regains his focus: “Let’s catch him.”
