After the conclusion of the Miami Grand Prix, the race classification was modified following the decisions taken by the stewards, who were called to investigate two separate incidents involving Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. The two penalties differed significantly in terms of severity and impact: the 5-second penalty given to Verstappen did not affect his final finishing position, while the 20-second penalty applied to the Monegasque significantly altered the final order.
The Ferrari driver, who ended up spinning on the final lap in Turn 3 and subsequently hitting the wall, continued towards the finish line with a car that was not fully controllable through the right-hand corners. According to the stewards, the fact that he repeatedly cut chicanes, left the track, and gained a lasting advantage resulted in a penalty that would normally have been served as a drive-through, but was instead converted into a 20-second time penalty added to his final race result.
The consequence is that Leclerc drops from sixth to eighth place, losing valuable points in the drivers’ championship. This benefits Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto. Ferrari also sees its total score in the Constructors’ Championship change, moving from 112 to 110 points.
The situation was different for Verstappen. The Dutch driver was penalised for having crossed the continuous white line at pit exit with his front-left tyre, in breach of the International Sporting Code. The 5-second time penalty added to his race time, however, had no effect on his position, as Verstappen remains fifth.
The updated standings therefore show a notable shift mainly within the internal Ferrari battle: Lewis Hamilton moves up to 51 points, Charles Leclerc drops from 63 to 59 points and loses important ground, while Colapinto rises to 7 points and Alpine improves its overall tally in the Constructors’ Championship, reaching 23 points.
At the top, the dominance of Mercedes remains unchanged, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli leading the way on 100 points ahead of George Russell, while the German team continues to lead the Constructors’ Championship with 180 points.
