Max Verstappen triumphs, also collecting the additional point for the fastest lap in the race. The two Mercedes cars take the team to the second step of the championship podium. Here’s how the driver and constructor standings change after the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix in Formula 1.
At the top of the driver standings, the “Orange” domination continues to grow: Max Verstappen reigns supreme in Barcelona and takes home the Catalan Grand Slam. Starting from pole position, leading the race from start to finish, and setting the fastest lap, he never doubted his victory. The world championship leadership remains secure.
In third place, but with some growing concerns, is Fernando Alonso. The Asturian, coming off a disappointing seventh-place finish (compared to expectations), sees the two Mercedes drivers closing in, both on the podium in Catalonia.
Looking at the constructor standings, there is a change just below the top spot. Red Bull firmly holds the first place, but the same cannot be said for the role of the main challenger: Aston Martin relinquishes P2 to Mercedes. Now, the gap between the two teams is 18 points in favor of the Brackley-Brixworth outfit.
It was a challenging weekend for Scuderia Ferrari. Despite the updates, the Prancing Horse is far from comfortable: Carlos Sainz finishes fifth after starting from the front row, while Charles Leclerc fails to even reach the points zone. The podium in the constructor championship slips further away.
