The Sky Sport team gathered around Carlo Vanzini, who is currently battling pancreatic cancer, sharing messages filled with emotion and support from colleagues.
During the post-race show after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, an intense wave of emotion spread through the studio. It came from a united group standing behind one of its most recognizable members, Carlo Vanzini — the historic voice of Formula 1 on Sky Italia — who has been facing the hardest personal challenge of his life. As Carlo Vanzini publicly explained, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on June 18. After ten rounds of chemotherapy, he is now awaiting surgery scheduled for late January.
Live on air, Sky Sport presenter and commentator Davide Camicioli could not hide his emotions when thinking of his colleague. His message was spontaneous, heartfelt, and full of gratitude. Camicioli closed the broadcast with these words: “Yes, this is an important moment, the finale, we’ll see each other in 2026 and above all thank you Carlo. Thank you, and I want you to keep giving me a hard time just as you did all season, because you gave me the strength to get through even the, sorry, difficult moments.”
Amid emotion and laughter (“Long pants,” Carlo Vanzini replied, joking about TV dress code rules), a wave of support followed, culminating in a collective applause when Ivan Capelli encouraged him by saying: “Great captain.”
Carlo’s journey
The illness, discovered last June thanks to an unexpected medical check-up that was recommended by Camicioli himself, led Vanzini to begin chemotherapy: ten cycles already completed and surgery now set for January. The journalist described himself as a “lucky patient” because the diagnosis came in time.
That moment on live television — suspended between modesty and emotion — showed that Formula 1 is not only about engines and racing, but also about real people and stories that reach far beyond the track. In a fiercely competitive environment like motorsport, watching colleagues come together to support someone facing such a difficult challenge made the human side of racing shine through clearly.
Carlo Vanzini has given a great deal to Italian Formula 1 broadcasting with his voice and his passion. Today, many people are giving something back: a collective embrace filled with respect, hope, and humanity before anything else related to the sport.
