Ferrari has identified the turning point from which it started to give life to the new SF-24, and it could mark a very different future.
Lewis Hamilton’s arrival was not the only turning point for Ferrari and the new SF-24. The arrival of the seven-time world champion certainly marks a rebirth for the Maranello team. But even before reaching the signing of Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari went through a low point that was necessary to lay the groundwork for a better future.
Certainly, Lewis Hamilton’s signature is the relevant and immediately noticeable fact. But for those who know the developments of the Maranello team perfectly, it will be easy to identify the turning point in the Friday at Zandvoort, where Ferrari was at the ‘mercy of the waves’.
The new project and, above all, a shake-up in the mindset of the people in Maranello originated from there. In the Dutch weekend, Ferrari certainly had the opportunity to learn a lot for the future. Right there, the SF-23 had shown all its understanding limits and the need to solve them as quickly as possible.
Instead of focusing on the race and tire preparation for the weekend, Ferrari differentiated the setups between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz and focused on understanding the car, evaluating the behavior of the car with different levels of aerodynamic load and mechanical setups.
Through that very risky choice, Ferrari had the opportunity to identify the necessary steps for the SF-24 project. The differentiation brought out all the weaknesses of the car, a necessary step to work on them and limit them.

According to Charles Leclerc, that step was necessary to start the design point of the new project and shift it in the new direction that, already in the second half of the 2023 Formula 1 season, bore fruit. Certainly, we will have to wait to see the results on the track, but, thanks to that turning point, cautious optimism can now be felt in Maranello.
