Schumacher ’94 will be the title of the new Netflix documentary focused on a true Formula 1 legend, and it is already generating intense debate even before its release.
Netflix is returning to Formula 1 with Schumacher ’94, a new documentary that focuses on one specific and highly significant year in the career of the legendary seven-time world champion. The streaming platform continues to invest heavily in top-level motorsport, aiming to attract an even wider global audience by telling powerful and emotionally charged sporting stories.
Following the huge success of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, now in its eighth season, Schumacher ’94 will recount a pivotal year in the life and career of Michael Schumacher. Produced by Leonine Documentaries, the official synopsis of the documentary states: “1994 marked a turning point in the history of Formula 1: the 25-year-old Michael Schumacher won the first Grand Prix of the season in Brazil, laying the foundations for an unprecedented career. The 1994 season, one of the most dramatic and emotionally charged years in Formula 1 history, was defined by events of enormous impact, including the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna, as well as accusations of manipulation and unfair driving practices.”
At the same time as the tragic death of the iconic Brazilian driver, the sporting world began to notice the emergence of a new star: “A real ‘Schumi Mania’ took hold. Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, and other people close to him recall that period.”
Michael is described as “an uncompromising fighter on the track and a sensitive, empathetic man away from the circuits. Corinna Schumacher, who has always been his emotional support, also offers a glimpse into the beginnings of an extraordinary love story, which continues to this day.”
Schumacher ’94 will be directed by Christin Freitag. The executive producers are Jochen Köstler, Janek Romero and Constanze Guttmann. Netflix had already produced a documentary dedicated to the Formula 1 champion, which was released in 2021.
This new production is already sparking debate because of what happened during that fateful season. In 1994, Schumacher won his first world championship title with Benetton under highly controversial circumstances. The team was accused of several irregularities intended to favour the then 25-year-old German driver, including the illegal use of traction control and the removal of a fuel filter to speed up pit stops.
Schumacher ’94 will be released on Netflix during the course of 2026.
