The extreme heat expected at the Qatar Grand Prix has raised concerns, with FIA, Formula 1, and Pirelli actively considering solutions to ensure safe and competitive racing. It is likely that a previously used strategy could make a return to help manage the challenging conditions on the track.
The topic of excessive heat comes up every time the F1 season approaches the Qatar race weekend. In past editions, both the FIA and Pirelli were forced to introduce last-minute solutions to prevent tire-related problems during the race at Losail.
In 2024, teams were required to make at least two pit stops during the Grand Prix due to tire limitations. The year before, in 2023, a maximum limit of eighteen laps per tire set was imposed. Previous sessions had revealed tire issues caused by the shape and configuration of the curbs on the Qatari circuit.
Looking ahead to the 2025 edition, FIA, Formula 1, and Pirelli are assessing possible strategies to prevent tire problems under extreme temperatures. Simone Berra, one of Pirelli’s responsible engineers, explained: “We have not decided anything yet. We are discussing it and will make a decision as soon as possible. At the moment, nothing is official. We will definitely use data from previous years. We had issues with the curbs in 2023 and with volumetric tire degradation in 2024. The tire structure has not changed in terms of resistance, so we need to carefully evaluate all parameters.”
Simone Berra added: “We want to avoid any kind of problem so that teams can manage their stints as they see fit. We hope to reach a decision quickly.”
