Red Bull admitted that Scuderia Ferrari will be their main rivals in the first round of the 2022 Formula 1 season this weekend at the Bahrain GP following a “very quick” start to the Sakhir weekend on Friday – with the Sky Sports Formula 1 pundits predicting a Max Verstappen vs Charles Leclerc fight for pole position tomorrow.
2021 Formula One world champion Max Verstappen ended the first day of the new campaign on top with a leading time of 1:31.936 in Practice Two, but the Maranello team lived up to a complimentary billing with Charles Leclerc just 0.087s behind the Dutch driver while his team-mate Carlos Sainz was third-fastest.
Mercedes have dominated the last eight seasons of F1 but for now do not seem able to get involved in the fight for the race win at the Bahrain International Circuit this weekend.
Charles Leclerc is aiming to take pole in his Ferrari in Saturday’s qualifying at the Bahrain Grand Prix, as Sky Sport F1 pundits reflect on the Ferrari – Red Bull battle in the first round of the 2022 Formula One championship.
1996 Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill: “I think it could be very close [between Verstappen and Leclerc]. I just think Red Bull have got something in their back pocket, they’re just not showing us, it all looked a bit too easy for Max. Ferraris do look good, but keep your powder dry.”
Karun Chandhok added: “Really very impressive from Ferrari, I think they’ve come out the blocks strong. Interested to see when we get to qualifying where it really matters if they’re in that fight. The engines will all still be in practice mode. But my gut tells me we’ve got Verstappen vs Leclerc for poll.”
