Formula 1 teams will have the opportunity to test a new C2 compound for 2024 during the Japanese Grand Prix practice sessions. This new compound is expected to provide better grip compared to the current one. In Mexico, a C4 2024 compound will also be tested.
The Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix scheduled for this weekend will provide a glimpse of the 2024 F1 season. Pirelli has brought a new C2 compound (which will be considered ‘Medium’ for the Japanese weekend) to Suzuka in preparation for the next Formula 1 season.
On Friday, during the first two free practice sessions in Suzuka, teams will have the opportunity to test the compound that Pirelli intends to approve for the next Formula 1 season.
According to the leaders of the Milan-based company, this tire should offer better grip than the one used this season and will be positioned more equitably between the C1 and C3 compounds.
“On Friday of this Grand Prix, all the teams will have the opportunity to test a new version of the C2 compound with the aim of approving it for the next season,” confirmed Mario Isola, Head of Pirelli’s Motorsport Division.
“This evolution should provide more grip than the current C2, positioning it more accurately between the C1 and C3 compounds.”
To ensure that the preparation for qualifying and the race is not affected, Pirelli will provide teams with two additional sets of tires in addition to the 13 sets guaranteed for the first two free practice sessions during a normal race weekend.
“Each driver will have two additional sets of tires compared to the traditional 13 sets to be used in the first two free practice sessions,” Isola continued.
The test at Suzuka will not be a one-off. Already at the Mexican Grand Prix scheduled for the weekend of October 27th to 29th, Pirelli will repeat the same test during the first two practice sessions.
However, in that instance, teams will not be testing the C2 2024 but the C4, which is the second-softest compound in Pirelli’s range for the next season. The testing procedures will be the same as those used in Suzuka this weekend.
“This test is part of a development program defined in recent weeks for the 2024 season and will continue – regarding on-track activity – during the Mexican Grand Prix when, using similar methods, an evolution of the C4 compound can be tested,” concluded the Head of Pirelli’s Motorsport Division.
