The scourge of bad weather is hitting Imola and the entire Emilia Romagna region, causing inconvenience and difficulties for the population. From the local administration to the Civil Protection, efforts are being made to limit risks and damages, and updates are constantly being provided. Alongside primary concerns for people’s safety, in the past few hours, some voices have heightened fears about the regular running of the Imola F1 Grand Prix this weekend. The situation is clearly subject to developments, but let’s try to clarify the weather conditions and risks for the Imola weekend.
At present, the latest weather forecast from the Emilia Romagna Region, ARPAE, and the Civil Protection indicates a red alert status for the entire day on Wednesday, May 17th. Bulletin 062/2023, issued at 12:11 PM on May 16th, states: “On Wednesday, May 17th, there will be a low-pressure system with widespread rainfall in the first part of the day, gradually decreasing.”
The forecast indicates a stationary trend for the next 48 hours, as reported in the forecast. There is a possibility of “significant increases in water levels in the minor hydrographic network,” which is associated with the risk of flooding, difficulties in water disposal, and possible landslides.
Imola, in the C2 area, is under a red alert for hydraulic and hydrogeological criticality. The latest flash update from the Region’s Telegram channel reports numerous instances of flooding.
Despite the challenges and the weather alert at the beginning of this week, the Imola F1 Grand Prix does not seem to be at risk of cancellation at the moment. The situation is, of course, being monitored by the authorities, and further updates will be provided regularly.
Consulting the website of the Emilia Romagna region, it appears that the greatest difficulties are indeed expected for these days. The situation seems delicate, but the necessary evaluations will be made as the hours pass. The mayor of Imola, Marco Panieri, reportedly responded to a young man on social media that canceling the Grand Prix is not even among the possibilities at the moment.

However, there are still inconveniences for the population in terms of transportation and communication. Train services are also affected, with Trenitalia reporting at 2:30 PM on May 16th: “Train circulation is still suspended between Rimini and Ravenna and between Forlì and Rimini, and it is still slowed down between Rimini and Senigallia, awaiting the intervention of technicians and the Civil Protection.”
The situation is under constant monitoring, and updates will follow. For forecasts and alert updates, it is also advisable to consult the official website managed by ARPAE and the Civil Protection. Flash updates are also posted by the mayor of Imola on their social media channels.
Circuit currently evacuated
This was reported by a reporter from the French broadcaster CanalPlus, Laurent Dupin. He posted some photos of the track on his Twitter profile: “Heavy rain and risk of flooding in Imola. The circuit is evacuated.”
