The Penalty Points system has been in place since the 2014 Formula 1 championship when it was introduced to make drivers pay close attention to their on-track actions to avoid disqualification.
A driver who accumulates 12 penalty points within a 12-month period (not necessarily in a single F1 campaign) will face an automatic race ban. As of today, no driver has reached this negative milestone. Let’s take a look at the situation after the most recent event on the 2023 Formula 1 calendar, the Canadian Grand Prix.
F1 Penalty Points: Standings ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix
In the race held at Montreal’s Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, several drivers received penalties for their actions both on and off the track. The two Haas drivers, Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, received their first reprimand of the season (a maximum of three can be accumulated) for arriving late to the Drivers Parade preceding the Grand Prix. Additionally, Nico Hülkenberg also collected another Penalty Point for failing to respect the delta time under red flag conditions.
On the other hand, Lando Norris lost his position in the final top ten due to a five-second penalty imposed for driving too slowly under Safety Car conditions, thus facilitating a double pit stop for his mechanics. Below is the updated standings.
