The current Penalty points system has been in force since the 2014 Formula 1 season, and it is a system that forces drivers to pay close attention to their actions on the track in order not to incur a race ban.
Any driver who accumulates 12 penalty points over a 12-month period (not necessarily in a season), will in fact receive an automatic ban for the next race. To date, no driver has achieved this negative milestone. Let’s see how the situation stands after the race at the Albert Park circuit in Australia.
F1 and Penalty points, the situation after the Melbourne event.
The first penalty points of the season were awarded by the FIA stewards to Carlos Sainz, following the contact in the second restart – the one on lap 57 following the second red flag – which led to a spin for Fernando Alonso (Ferrari has announced that it is requesting a review of the case).
Both Alpine drivers, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, on the other hand, got away without any penalties despite the accident that saw them involved in the same circumstance. The Frenchman was particularly lucky, as he is risking a suspension for some time now. Here is the complete situation in terms of penalty points ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
