The state of Formula 1 continues to improve and grow. The sport, be excellent. The highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars, two years after the outbreak of the pandemic that threatened to severely affect several teams and partners working in other related industries, is now experiencing a state of expansion and progress: more and more spectators are atteding the race weekends from the circuits and – taking into account the ‘filter’ imposed by pay TVs – even those who watch the GPs on television.
More and more countries want to be part of the Formula 1 calendar, forcing the top management of the sport to impose a maximum limit of races to avoid that the program of a single season could risk becoming overexpanded. But it is precisely when things go well and there is a high interest that F1 needs to think of new solutions for the future that should be able to keep the offer for viewers fresh and interesting.
This is exactly what Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali is thinking about, as he illustrated some of his plans for the near future during a videoconference with the main Italian newspapers and media outlets. The manager from Imola focused on two main points: the expansion of the world championship calendar and the structure of the individual race weekends, which is destined to change again to meet the public’s interest:
“Next year we will have 24 races – the former Ferrari boss said, however hinting that even among the tracks that have been present for decades in the sport no one is safe – we want to race in South Africa, we are discussing to create a solid project, not just a race and then say goodbye. There are also discussions with Saudi Arabia, Austria and Monaco.” – the current CEO of Formula One Group continued, as reported by the Italian media.
Regarding the structure of the individual weekends, the strategy of the former Ferrari team principal is very clear: more action, more entertainment and fewer ‘useless’ sessions from the point of view of the final result. This will lead to a further reduction in free practice sessions, to an increase in the number of Sprint Races and – who knows – also to some new solutions not yet foreseen:

“Free practice is liked by engineers and drivers, but spectators want more. I am very determined on this – Stefano Domenicali stressed – apart from the first round on Friday, I would like points or prizes to be awarded every day, in every single session, while respecting the importance of Sunday’s race. We will work on it with the FIA and with the teams. We need even more action.” – the Italian manager concluded.
