The recent announcement of Charles Leclerc’s engagement to his partner Alexandra has drawn significant attention across the Formula 1 paddock. Even Nico Hulkenberg, currently the only married driver on the grid, shared his thoughts with the media in Brazil. The German driver from Sauber spoke warmly and realistically about Charles Leclerc’s decision, emphasizing how this milestone represents an important step in a driver’s personal life as well.
Hulkenberg: “Our balance depends on the people around us”
Nico Hulkenberg commented in Brazil:
“It’s obviously a very special moment for anyone deciding to take this step, and Alex and I are incredibly happy for him. She is very involved in Formula 1—not technically, of course, but like all of us, I believe we are human beings and our balance depends heavily on the support of those closest to us. Alex is the most important person in my life, alongside my family.”
Why are married drivers becoming rare in F1?
The German driver then reflected on why it is generally uncommon to see F1 drivers getting married or officially engaged during their careers:
“I think it’s a very personal and individual matter. Many of the drivers nowadays are quite young, and at their age, I was still far from that kind of commitment. I believe it depends a lot on age and where you are in life.”
Nico Hulkenberg also joked about being the only married driver currently on the grid, a fact that even surprised him:
“Really? Well, Checo [Pérez] is coming back. And Kevin [Magnussen] was still here last year.”
