F1 Miami GP 2026: Charles Leclerc penalised after stewards’ post-race investigation
The 2026 Miami Grand Prix concluded with further frustration for Ferrari, as Charles Leclerc was handed a post-race penalty following a detailed stewards’ investigation into several incidents during the closing stages of the race. The decision added another layer of disappointment to what had already been a difficult and inconsistent weekend for the Maranello-based team.
Charles Leclerc, who had been running in contention for a podium position earlier in the race, saw his hopes collapse after a spin while battling at the front group. What initially looked like a promising result for Ferrari eventually turned into a recovery drive, but the situation worsened further after the chequered flag when the FIA stewards completed their review.
Stewards explain decision on Charles Leclerc’s Miami GP penalty
Following the race, the FIA stewards concluded that Charles Leclerc had breached safety-related regulations in the final phase of the Grand Prix. According to the official findings, after making contact with the wall and sustaining damage to the SF-26, the Ferrari driver continued to push the car in a condition that was deemed not fully safe under the regulations.
The investigation also focused on repeated track limits infringements, with Charles Leclerc observed cutting multiple corners while attempting to manage his damaged car and defend position under pressure from rivals. These actions contributed to the overall assessment of the situation by race control.
A further key element in the stewards’ review was the late-race battle between Charles Leclerc and Mercedes driver George Russell. The FIA analysis suggested that the Monegasque forced George Russell off the racing line during their duel for position, which was considered a significant factor in the final decision.
The situation was further complicated by the earlier spin, which had already damaged Charles Leclerc’s chances of fighting for the podium. Before that mistake, the Ferrari driver had been involved in a competitive battle with Oscar Piastri for a top-three finish, but the error dropped him behind George Russell and Max Verstappen, leaving him in a compromised position for the remainder of the race.
The stewards rejected the argument that Charles Leclerc’s driving infringements were solely a consequence of his damaged Ferrari SF-26. As a result, the FIA imposed a 20-second time penalty on the Monegasque driver, significantly affecting his final classification in the Miami Grand Prix results.
Ferrari weekend under scrutiny after Miami GP setbacks
The Miami race had been viewed internally by Ferrari as a potential turning point in the 2026 Formula 1 season, particularly due to the introduction of upgrades to the SF-26, including the revised rear wing package known as the “Macarena” specification. While there were some encouraging signs in qualifying performance, the race itself once again exposed limitations in long-run pace and operational execution.
Charles Leclerc’s post-race penalty only amplified the disappointment for Ferrari, highlighting not just performance inconsistencies but also issues in managing complex race situations under pressure. The combination of strategic challenges, on-track incidents, and regulatory scrutiny left the team with limited positives to take away from the weekend.
Ferrari is now expected to conduct a detailed technical and operational review of the Miami Grand Prix, focusing on both the SF-26’s race performance and decision-making during critical phases of the event. The objective will be to prevent similar situations from affecting future races as the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses.
