Antonio Fuoco will take to the track for Ferrari during FP1 of the 2025 Mexican Grand Prix, likely replacing Lewis Hamilton as part of the FIA’s rookie driver sessions. These sessions are one of the two annual opportunities in which each team must run a young driver with fewer than two Formula 1 race starts.
It has not yet been officially confirmed whether Antonio Fuoco will take the place of Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton, but it is most likely that the Briton will sit out. Charles Leclerc has already been replaced twice this season by Dino Beganovic. The main goal of this FP1 session is to gather valuable data for car development and to prepare for the upcoming season.
Fuoco to replace Hamilton in Mexico?
Antonio Fuoco, 29, has long been an integral part of Ferrari’s sporting program. He serves as a test and reserve driver for both the Formula 1 team and Ferrari’s endurance division. In recent years, he has contributed to the development of the Ferrari 499P in the WEC, achieving victory at the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Antonio Giovinazzi and Alessandro Pier Guidi.
According to FIA regulations, each team must run at least two FP1 sessions per season with a rookie driver. Ferrari has chosen the Mexico City round to fulfill this requirement, on a circuit where altitude and grip conditions provide valuable technical data for car development.
Depending on the session’s progress and the team’s program, Antonio Fuoco may alternate between different race pace simulations and setup tests. The primary objective is to deliver direct feedback to Ferrari engineers in Maranello to support ongoing car development and optimization.
