Max Verstappen on Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari decision
Max Verstappen has shared his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari, and he admitted that he does not agree with the reasons behind it. While many in the paddock continue to wonder if Lewis Hamilton made the right career move, the Dutchman gave his own perspective on what has become one of the biggest talking points in Formula 1. Once fierce rivals, the two multiple world champions now share a mutual respect, even if their views on Ferrari are not aligned.
A tough first season for Hamilton in red
The Red Bull driver discussed Hamilton’s first season in Maranello, suggesting that it has been tougher than the seven-time world champion expected, largely due to the challenge of adapting to a new environment. Verstappen explained to F1Insider: “I can’t really judge how he worked at Mercedes or how he feels inside the team. But he has joined a team that already had a very strong driver in Charles. It’s never easy to immediately outperform a teammate who knows the team, the processes, and even the language inside out. It can be very complicated to understand why they are quick or not.”
Ferrari, a dream but not a reason for Max Verstappen
Verstappen acknowledged that racing for Ferrari is a dream for most drivers, including himself, but he stressed that emotions alone should not dictate such a career move. While he understands why Lewis Hamilton wanted to drive for such an iconic brand, Verstappen made it clear that he would not make the same decision. He stated: “Ferrari is a huge brand. Every driver imagines themselves racing there. But I wouldn’t go just because it’s Ferrari. I would only go if I saw a real chance to win there. It cannot be an emotional decision.”
Could Verstappen ever drive for Ferrari?
In recent weeks, Max Verstappen’s own name has been linked to Ferrari in rumors, sparking speculation about whether the Dutchman could one day move to Maranello. For now, however, his attention remains firmly on the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, where McLaren is proving dominant and Ferrari is struggling for consistency. Hamilton is still chasing his first podium in red, while Charles Leclerc appears far more comfortable and capable of extracting performance from the tricky SF-25.
The contrast between the two Ferrari drivers highlights just how challenging Hamilton’s adaptation has been, reinforcing Verstappen’s view that joining Maranello is not a decision that should be made based on prestige alone.
