F1 | Macarena rear wing still in development, Ferrari targets Japan debut. Ferrari tested the Macarena flap at the Chinese GP.

Ferrari introduced the innovative new movable rear wing, referred to by the team as the “Macarena” flap, during the sole free practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix. This new system is still in an early stage of development and is not yet fully optimized, as it created a measurable aerodynamic imbalance between the closing time of the front movable wing and that of the rear movable wing. Despite this, the data collected during the Shanghai session is considered extremely valuable, and it will play a crucial role in preparing the car for the first full deployment of the Macarena flap in Japan, where it is expected to be particularly effective due to the nature of the Suzuka circuit and its high-speed cornering demands combined with long straights.

At the Shanghai International Circuit, Ferrari provided plenty of on-track excitement for fans, with repeated and thrilling wheel-to-wheel battles between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, showcasing the SF-26’s potential in competitive racing conditions. However, despite these competitive moments, the car could only manage a third-place finish for the British driver, who, after years of experience and seven world championship titles, finally achieved his first podium finish with Ferrari. Meanwhile, the day also marked a historic and deserved victory for Kimi Antonelli, who achieved his first Formula 1 win. Ferrari, however, lost roughly 25 seconds to the leaders, an enormous margin in modern Formula 1 terms and particularly significant considering that Mercedes continues to dominate the field with both Kimi Antonelli and his teammate George Russell, who have consistently demonstrated the exceptional performance of the W17.

Analyzing the performance gap in detail, the SF-26 was found to be approximately four and a half tenths slower per lap compared to the leading Mercedes W17 cars. While this gap is too large to realistically challenge Mercedes’ continuing dominance at this stage of the season, the data from China offered extremely clear indications about the car’s strengths and weaknesses. The SF-26 proves highly competitive in the first two sectors of the Shanghai International Circuit, showing strong pace through the technical sequences. However, most of its performance deficit emerges on the long straights, where aerodynamic drag and power unit efficiency become critical. Approximately three-tenths of a second per lap are lost in these high-speed sections alone, which highlights the areas Ferrari must target for improvement in order to close the gap to Mercedes.

While the FIA has justifiably postponed discussions on potential regulatory adjustments ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Ferrari’s engineers and technicians are fully aware that significant work remains to be done to bring the SF-26 closer to the performance levels of the Mercedes cars. Understanding how to optimize the management of battery energy during races is one thing, but extracting the missing mechanical and electrical power from the 067/6 six-cylinder turbo hybrid engine is a separate and equally critical challenge. Ferrari’s Power Unit Department has estimated that approximately 20 to 25 horsepower is missing at high engine speeds, a shortfall that can have a considerable effect on lap times, particularly in qualifying runs where every fraction of a second is crucial.

Part of this performance deficit can be attributed to the use of a hot compression ratio above 16:1, which, under the current regulations, will continue to be measured at ambient temperature until June 1. Another contributing factor is the high-performance Petronas fuel used by Ferrari, which has been specially formulated to take advantage of the higher compression ratio, allowing for increased thermal energy release in the combustion chamber. This combination of advanced fuel chemistry and elevated compression ratio produces a significant boost in performance, especially at high RPM, which helps offset some of the car’s limitations in straight-line speed.

In addition to these factors, the SF-26 also benefits from a larger turbocharger, which provides additional peak power. This allows the internal combustion engine to contribute more effectively to battery recharge using the so-called super clipping strategy on the long straights, where the excess power from the engine is diverted to the battery without significantly compromising the car’s maximum speed. This system is essential in modern Formula 1, where energy management and efficiency play a pivotal role in race strategy and overall lap time optimization.

Ferrari is currently awaiting the implementation of ADUO updates, which are expected to allow further engine recovery and performance improvements. These updates are anticipated for the Hungarian Grand Prix, which will take place prior to the Formula 1 summer break. In the meantime, the team’s focus remains firmly on developing the SF-26, with a strong emphasis on maximizing the chassis and aerodynamic potential of the car. Engineers at Maranello, led by technical director Loic Serra, are working intensively to refine every element of the package, aiming to extract the performance required to challenge Mercedes under the right conditions.

Certain circuits with more corners and technical sections could present opportunities for Ferrari to exploit the SF-26’s advantages, potentially putting Mercedes cars under pressure and allowing the Scuderia to capitalize on any weaknesses. The team is fully aware that these opportunities must be maximized whenever possible, and the ongoing development of the car is designed to ensure that the SF-26 is capable of performing at its best under a variety of conditions.

During the Chinese Grand Prix, both Ferrari drivers tested the movable rear wing during the single free practice session, gathering as much data as possible before the wing was temporarily set aside. This led some observers to prematurely declare that the Macarena wing had been rejected. However, this is far from the truth. While the wing was not ready for deployment in the second race of the season, Ferrari never intended it to be used at every race. The Macarena flap is a strategic development tool that the team has carefully planned for selective deployment based on track characteristics and aerodynamic demands.

Originally, the Macarena wing was scheduled to debut in Bahrain and was briefly tested during pre-season sessions at Sakhir. However, with the cancellation of the two Gulf races, the Italian side took the opportunity to bring the wing forward in its development schedule, ultimately planning to deploy it at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, where its benefits are expected to be most pronounced due to the track’s combination of long straights and complex corners.

The Chinese test proved critical, revealing that the closing timing of the Macarena wing requires fine-tuning. The system rotates both upper and lower flaps on their respective axes, but the front movable wing closes faster than the rear, creating an aerodynamic imbalance that must be corrected to ensure consistent performance. The data collected at the Shanghai International Circuit will be used to refine simulations and predict optimal performance for the Japanese Grand Prix, ensuring that the wing contributes to both downforce in corners and low drag on straights.

According to various reports in the Italian media, the Macarena wing remains in the early stages of development. Until the standard functionality of the system is perfected, further evolutionary updates cannot be introduced. Once fully optimized, the wing is expected to improve aerodynamic efficiency significantly, reducing drag on open-wing sections and increasing downforce through technical corners, especially in high-speed sequences where precise aero balance is critical.

Ferrari is therefore actively developing the SF-26 with a clear focus on performance gains. The Macarena wing represents just one part of a broader program aimed at narrowing the gap to Mercedes and extracting maximum potential from both the chassis and power unit. Fans can expect a substantial upgrade package at the Miami Grand Prix on May 4, which will be the first race after the April break in the Formula 1 calendar. The Scuderia is committed to continuing its development trajectory, ensuring that the SF-26 remains competitive in the ongoing championship battle.
