Positive 2026 tests for Ferrari, but Hamilton is not getting carried away
Ferrari’s Prancing Horse from Maranello wrapped up the week of testing in Barcelona by setting the fastest lap time, recorded by Lewis Hamilton on Friday afternoon. As already highlighted, however, these figures mean very little on their own, as there is no clarity regarding the tyre compounds used, fuel loads, engine modes, or, above all, how hard the drivers were really pushing.
Hamilton himself was quick to urge caution, stating that Ferrari is not harbouring any “illusions” about its prospects for the 2026 Formula 1 season, despite the apparently positive signs that emerged from the on-track running.
Both the British driver and his team-mate Charles Leclerc reportedly posted relatively impressive figures, according to unconfirmed data, including over race-distance runs. The new power unit, which was also run by both Haas and Cadillac, appeared to operate without major issues. The American team, in particular, gathered some very interesting data, helped by Oliver Bearman completing as many as 106 laps on Friday.
The 2026 season is unquestionably a crucial one for the Maranello-based team, which, after a winless and deeply disappointing campaign, needs to return to the positions that truly matter. However, the new regulatory cycle introduces a level of unpredictability that could be unprecedented in modern Formula 1.
For this reason, despite describing himself as genuinely optimistic, the British driver continues to keep his feet firmly on the ground. As reported by motorsportweek, the seven-time world champion is hoping for a much stronger season than the previous one and, when speaking to reporters, explained: “Everyone is positive and incredibly excited. I mean, we’re not getting carried away. We know that we have work to do. Mercedes has done a great job, as have Red Bull and Haas. So I don’t really know where we stand, but I think it’s been a solid first week and that we can really build from here. Now there could be some big steps to take.”
Lewis Hamilton then underlined how decisive the development race will be: “Development will be crucial, and we can’t afford to leave anything on the table. We’ll need to be really clear and concise in our communication and in the decisions we make. It will require maximum commitment from all of us, and I can see that everyone is coming into this year with renewed energy, which is fantastic.”
Lewis Hamilton’s balanced perspective following the Barcelona shakedown highlights the psychological maturity he brings to Ferrari as they navigate the complexities of the 2026 technical overhaul. By acknowledging the “solid” foundation of the SF-26 while simultaneously praising the progress of rivals Mercedes and Red Bull, the Briton is ensuring the team remains focused on long-term development rather than early-season headlines. With the new power unit showing strong reliability across the Ferrari-partnered teams, the success of the 2026 campaign will likely hinge on Maranello’s ability to maintain this “new energy” and execute the concise decision-making Hamilton is demanding as they head toward the first race in Australia.
While the timesheets suggest a Ferrari resurgence, Lewis Hamilton’s call for realism reminds us that the true 2026 pecking order will only be revealed once the development race officially begins in Bahrain.
