Michael Schumacher felt at home at Ristorante Montana
One of the most heartwarming stories about former Scuderia Ferrari driver and Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher comes from Rosella Giannini, co-owner and chef of Ristorante Montana, a famed Maranello eatery. She recalls a memory from just before Christmas: “One year just before Christmas he came and there was no table so he went upstairs to my house to eat. At that point he understood that he was at home when he came here. After eleven years together it was like having another son.”
The Ferrari F1 canteen that became iconic
Ristorante Montana, affectionately known as “Mama Rosella” by locals, has earned its reputation as the go-to dining spot for Ferrari’s most famous F1 drivers. Its walls are adorned with portraits of racing legends, signed helmets, and racing suits, creating a colorful, immersive homage to Ferrari’s history. The service is handled by Rosella’s husband, adding to the family-run atmosphere that sets the restaurant apart.
A quiet haven close to Ferrari’s heart
Despite its fame, Montana remains a humble spot just steps from Maranello, the home of Ferrari. Rosella has worked tirelessly to maintain the restaurant’s charm, competing against the premium luxury dining offered nearby, where corporate guests pay top dollar for a taste of Italian refinement. Here, however, the focus is on warmth, tradition, and the genuine hospitality that Michael Schumacher and other Ferrari drivers cherished.

Among the myriad of memorabilia, one image stands out: a large photograph capturing Michael Schumacher enjoying one of Rosella’s signature dishes—tagliatelle with pork ragu sauce. On the canvas, Michael Schumacher wrote in delicate Italian, “To my mama Rossella, thank you for everything,” symbolizing the deep bond he shared with the restaurant and its owners.
A place where F1 history comes alive
Ristorante Montana is more than just a restaurant; it is a living testament to Ferrari’s racing legacy. For fans and visitors, it offers a glimpse into the personal side of F1 legends, from shared meals to heartfelt gestures that extend beyond the track. Michael Schumacher’s story illustrates how moments of family-like warmth and simple culinary pleasures became a cherished part of the life of a racing icon.
