Despite Lewis Hamilton’s contract renewal with Mercedes being considered a mere formality, the agreement has yet to officially arrive, fueling rumors in the paddock. In recent days, David Coulthard had mentioned new difficulties in the negotiations between the seven-time world champion and the Brackley team.
Now, British former racing driver and former television announcer for Sky Sports F1, Johnny Herbert, has also weighed in on the matter, stating that he would be very surprised if Lewis Hamilton isn’t talking to Ferrari for the upcoming Formula 1 season.
Naturally, this would be a dramatic switch since Lewis Hamilton seemed to have already turned down an offer from Maranello. However, a move to Ferrari could be the only viable solution for the Briton if an agreement with Mercedes falls through.
In a statement to CasinoSite.nl, Johnny Herbert said, “I hope Lewis is still thinking that Mercedes might potentially not work for him, and what would be the best thing to do at that point? The red team, Ferrari. But that’s just my opinion.” He believes that discussions between Hamilton and Ferrari are still ongoing. “Are the talks between the parties going on? I’d be really shocked if they weren’t. I think it’s the best thing to do. They have all the ingredients; they just need to put them together.” – he pointed out.
However, Johnny Herbert believes that Ferrari’s recent performances could be a serious issue in the negotiation. Hamilton wants to win an eighth title, and according to the former driver, Maranello wouldn’t be able to present a true challenge to Red Bull. “There are some pieces that are not working. From the strategic calls, which are still an issue, to having a competitive car at the start of the year that then doesn’t get developed. They’re not in the position Lewis would want to be in to win another title.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
