Although Mercedes has not released the full details of Antonelli’s agreement, it is understood that the young Italian maintains strategic long-term connections with the Brackley-based team. Despite the extension, the one-year nature of his contract leaves the door open for potential changes, fueling rumors about future driver movements, including the possibility of Charles Leclerc stepping into the Mercedes cockpit.
Leclerc linked to Mercedes as Antonelli’s future remains uncertain
Toto Wolff has previously acknowledged that his public pursuit of Max Verstappen earlier this season created some instability around George Russell. However, the Mercedes team principal has also indicated that Verstappen remains a highly desirable target. Meanwhile, speculation within the paddock has grown around Charles Leclerc, who has expressed frustrations with Ferrari’s competitiveness this year, leading to renewed debate about whether the Monegasque could switch teams if the right opportunity arises.
Journalist Nate Saunders, speaking from the Circuit of the Americas paddock during an episode of ESPN’s Unlapped podcast, highlighted that Antonelli’s new short-term contract could inadvertently create an opening for Charles Leclerc. Saunders explained that while conventional thinking suggested George Russell’s contract might be limited to one year to leave options open for Verstappen in the future, the focus has now shifted to Antonelli. If he does not perform to expectations in the upcoming season, Toto Wolff may consider replacing him, potentially with Charles Leclerc if the Monegasque decides to explore options beyond Ferrari.
According to Saunders, the narrative in the paddock increasingly positions Antonelli’s one-year deal as a pivotal test, with Mercedes closely monitoring his performance. If the Italian fails to meet the team’s expectations, discussions about Leclerc moving to Mercedes could intensify, especially given Ferrari’s struggles to provide a consistently competitive car this season.
Charles Leclerc sets a timeline for the Maranello team’s competitiveness next year
Leclerc has made it clear that winning a Formula 1 World Championship with Ferrari remains a personal ambition. However, his patience may be running thin as the Scuderia has yet to provide a car capable of challenging for the title consistently. Sky Sport Italia journalist Roberto Chinchero emphasized during the United States Grand Prix that Charles Leclerc has effectively set an internal deadline, particularly for the first half of the 2026 season, to determine whether Ferrari can offer him a championship-worthy car.
Chinchero noted that if Ferrari meets the 28-year-old driver’s expectations in terms of car performance and race results, the Monegasque is unlikely to consider other teams. However, if Ferrari fails to deliver a competitive package, Charles Leclerc would logically begin exploring alternatives. While he may continue to monitor Ferrari’s progress, evaluating potential opportunities with other teams, including Mercedes, could become a realistic path for the driver to secure a championship-capable car.
With Mercedes maintaining a strategic interest in acquiring top-tier talent and Antonelli’s position effectively acting as a trial period, the F1 paddock is closely watching how the 2026 season unfolds. Should Antonelli falter and Charles Leclerc decide to depart Ferrari, the move could trigger one of the most high-profile driver swaps in recent Formula 1 history.
