Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, after their positive debut in Bahrain, want to confirm themselves at Imola, as the Maranello team will attempt to launch the challenge to Mclaren for third place in the constructors’ standings.
At the first home Grand Prix and at the racetrack named after its founder, Ferrari in Imola wants to do better than at the Bahrain Grand Prix. In fact, three weeks ago there were ups and downs on the flying lap and race pace, while this weekend Ferrari aim to improve the overall performance both in qualifying and in the race.
The Ferrari SF21 car in Sakhir, as had been seen in the pre-season testing session, proved to be competitive again on fast circuits. Precisely for this reason Imola represents an important test for the Maranello team, given that it is a complete track in which the new power unit and top speed will not be enough to go fast.
What can also make Ferrari confident for the next event is the fact that one year ago the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was one of the best weekends of the 2020 Formula 1 season. The SF1000 with minor upgrades allowed Charles Leclerc to finish fourth, and with an SF21 that in Bahrain felt like it solved most of last year’s car problems, the Monegasque driver will try to repeat himself.
If Ferrari is not yet ready to enter the Mercedes-Red Bull duel at the moment, the goal of its weekend will be to finish ahead of both McLarens. To do this, the Italian side will have to take a step forward in tire management, a weak point of the SF21 in Bahrain, especially with high fuel load, in order to challenge the Woking team for third place in the constructors’ standings.
Scuderia Ferrari, however, can count on Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, determined to make the Prancing Horse fans forget a disappointing 2020 season. The Monegasque will try to fight again for the second row, and improve Bahrain’s sixth place. The Spaniard, on the other hand, in addition to doing well in his first Italian race as a Scuderia Ferrari driver, wants to respond to his teammate and finish as close as possible to Charles.
