Nightmares returned for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari at Interlagos, as the seven-time world champion was knocked out of the top ten in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix. After a more promising performance in Mexico, it seemed that things might finally be turning around for the British driver. However, a disappointing qualifying session in São Paulo brought Ferrari back to a difficult reality, with Hamilton unable to extract the same performance as teammate Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc will start from third position on the grid, delivering a strong performance in a Ferrari that had shown some signs of improvement during the Sprint Race, even though both drivers struggled to keep pace with the Mercedes cars. George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli both finished ahead of the Scuderia’s pair in the shorter race, allowing the Silver Arrows to regain their advantage in the standings.
Lewis Hamilton’s words after qualifying
Speaking to the media after the session, Lewis Hamilton explained what went wrong during his Saturday in Brazil. “The setup of the car was good, exactly how we prepared it. Even at high speed, the car responded well, and we were strong on the straights. In fact, Charles is third. The problem was that we couldn’t get the tyres to work,” said the British driver, visibly disappointed with the outcome.
Lewis Hamilton also commented on his expectations for the race, knowing that recovering from the middle of the grid will be difficult at Interlagos. “Starting thirteenth will make it complicated to fight back, there’s not much I can do,” added the Ferrari driver.
With one car at the front and the other struggling in the midfield, Ferrari once again faces contrasting fortunes. The team will now need to focus on finding a strategy that could help Hamilton move up the order, while hoping that Charles Leclerc can turn his strong starting position into a podium finish in Sunday’s race.
