La sfida tra Ferrari e Mercedes per la conquista del campionato del mondo di F1 sta per salire di livello. Arrivati al 9° Gran premio su 21 totali, quello dell’Austria, la casa tedesca decide di giocare quella che spera essere una carta vincente. Dopo l’evoluzione del motore, che segue il passo analogo compiuto dalla Ferrari, ecco arrivare anche un significativo make-up aerodinamico che vedrà la luce in pista allo Spielberg. La scelta del Red Bull Ring non è casuale: qui la Mercedes ha vinto tutte le ultime 4 gare disputate. Un nuovo successo in Austria rischia così di aprire un solco profondo tra Stoccarda e Maranello, sempre che la mossa della Mercedes abbia successo. Il che è tutto da dimostrare. Dalla scuderia delle Frecce d’Argento trapela la consapevolezza infatti che, anche con questi ultimi aggiornamenti, la distanza tra i due team è e resterà minima. E a questo punto i piloti torneranno a essere fondamentali. Tanto che Lewis Hamilton sottolinea con entusiasmo: «È questa la F1 che preferisco, quella in cui si lotta punto a punto con le altre scuderie».

La costanza
Ne è consapevole anche Vettel che è nell’occhio del ciclone a seguito dell’errore in partenza nel Gp di Francia. Così non aggira le domande dei cronisti e spiega: «Molti avranno pensato che in Francia io non sia stato sufficientemente reattivo o, al contrario, troppo irruento. Ma da fuori non ci si rende conto quante piccole cose a questo livello possono fare la differenza. Certo è stato un mio errore. Ma non ho fatto una partenza selvaggia». E a chi gli chiede se gli manca la costanza per vincere il Mondiale replica con una metafora: «È importante criticare se stessi. La piallatura provoca la caduta dei trucioli, ma genera un prodotto migliore». Parole espresse con serenità. E infatti aggiunge: «La nostra vettura va forte e questa pista sembrerebbe esserci favorevole, sebbene ora sia impossibile prevedere quanto saremo competitivi, con il fattore meteo e tutte le variabili che possono accadere nel weekend. A inizio stagione eravamo molto competitivi su alcune piste, ed abbiamo identificato le aree in cui necessitavamo di migliorare. La Francia paradossalmente è stata un esempio: rispetto a Barcellona siamo andati molto meglio, e le condizioni erano simili come asfalto e temperature. Certo resta da capire su quali circuiti sarà più competitiva la Mercedes, ma questo non lo so». Sullo sfondo intanto resta il mercato piloti con Raikkonen che lascia trapelare un addio alla Rossa quando a domanda risponde: «Chiuderò la carriera alla Ferrari? Non lo so. Vedremo cosa succederà per l’anno prossimo». Al contrario Ricciardo sembra intenzionato a restare alla Red Bull avendo avuto garanzie per la firma di un contratto milionario della stessa consistenza del suo compagno di squadra Verstappen.
