George Russell revealed where Ferrari is currently able to outperform Mercedes with the SF-26. Following the Chinese Grand Prix, the Scuderia appears to have the potential to aim high for the remainder of the Formula 1 season.
After the Australian Grand Prix had already offered a fairly clear picture of the competitive order on track, the race weekend in Shanghai provided further insight into how close Ferrari is to the very front of the grid. In China, the Ferrari package showed impressive pace, with the car capable of matching the speed of the Mercedes for several laps and even emerging as the fastest car in certain sections of the circuit.
For this reason, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli had to work harder than expected to move back to the front of the field, eventually securing their second one-two finish of the season for the Silver Arrows. The two Mercedes drivers benefited from a W17 that appears to be more competitive than the SF-26 particularly on the straights, thanks to a power unit that is highly efficient and capable of managing electrical energy deployment very effectively.
Russell reveals Ferrari’s key advantage
Despite this, George Russell believes Ferrari still has a major strength that could allow the Italian team to remain in the fight for victories throughout the championship.
“I was waiting for Lewis and Charles to collide and somehow it didn’t happen. It was one of the most aggressive battles I’ve seen for quite some time. If I hadn’t been trying to win the race, I would have enjoyed watching the fight, but obviously seeing Kimi pulling away in those moments was a bit frustrating,” the British driver said during the post-race press conference.
George Russell also highlighted the area where Ferrari currently seems to hold the upper hand. “Ferrari was definitely very quick. They are faster than us in the corners but slower on the straight, so that made things a bit complicated. And when you’re trying to overtake two cars at the same time, it’s not easy at all. For now we have the advantage, but we can’t take it for granted because we know that some things will change over the next few months. Car upgrades during this period are extremely important, so we’ll see how it all ends,” he added.
The comments underline how closely matched the leading teams are at this stage of the Formula 1 season. While Mercedes may currently enjoy superior straight-line speed, Ferrari’s strong performance in the corners suggests that the SF-26 has significant aerodynamic potential. If the Scuderia can continue developing the car and address its straight-line deficit, the battle at the front of the grid could become even more intense in the races to come.
