This week, the legal case strongly initiated by Felipe Massa against the FIA and FOM is underway, as he seeks compensation regarding the 2008 World Championship. The episode in question is clearly the Singapore crash gate, which allegedly influenced the final result, effectively costing the Brazilian the championship.
During the Marina Bay race, driver Nelsinho Piquet reportedly caused a deliberate crash to allow his teammate, Fernando Alonso, to make a pit stop under the Safety Car and consequently win the race. On that occasion, Felipe experienced a disastrous pit stop that caused him to lose crucial points in the title fight against Lewis Hamilton. Recently, Bernie Ecclestone, then CEO of Formula 1, declared that he was aware of this scandal orchestrated by Renault but decided to cover it up.
The International Federation, as reported by RacingNews365, issued a document explaining its stance on the driver’s claims: “Mr. Massa’s requests are tortuous as well as excessively ambitious.” The former Ferrari driver is reportedly demanding a significant sum of money and an acknowledgment of fault from the FIA.
“The multi-millionaire Brazilian citizen and resident has filed a claim in this jurisdiction of England and Wales, based on an alleged violation of the FIA’s supranational regulations, a private international sporting organization based in France, in relation to events that occurred during the Singapore Grand Prix over 17 years ago, on September 28, 2008,” the statement reads.
The FIA also emphasizes the responsibilities of Massa and Ferrari regarding the 2008 World Championship outcome: “Mr. Massa’s claim overlooks a series of errors committed by himself or his team, Ferrari, during the Singapore GP and in other Grand Prix that contributed to the second-place finish in the Drivers’ Championship that season.”
