Ferrari is working hard on developing the SF-26, but the first upgrades will arrive later than expected. Here’s the reason and the new date when fans will see them on track.
In the first two races of the 2026 season, Ferrari has confirmed its position as the second-strongest team in the championship. Mercedes appears a step ahead in both qualifying and race pace, but the Maranello team is already working to reduce the gap. As confirmed by team principal Frederic Vasseur after the Chinese Grand Prix, Ferrari is working on multiple fronts to improve the overall package currently available to Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, with a series of updates in development.
F1 calendar changes and implications
The F1 calendar will pause in April, following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grands Prix due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East. Originally, as reported in recent weeks, Ferrari’s first updates were planned to debut precisely at those rounds.
New developments
According to RacingNews365, Fred Vasseur has now confirmed the new target date for the upgrades to hit the track. As reported by the outlet, the Ferrari team principal stated: “I think everyone was planning to bring a major upgrade in Bahrain, and this will now be postponed to Miami.”
Fred Vasseur, however, did not specify the type of upgrades we will see in Miami, adding: “I cannot anticipate what Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, or we will bring, but let’s focus on ourselves.”
The last race before the Miami Grand Prix will take place the weekend of March 29 in Japan. When the season resumes in May, teams will face two consecutive Sprint weekends: first in Miami, then in Canada. Fred Vasseur added: “We push until Miami. We also have more time to develop and bring more performance to Miami, and I think this applies to us, but also to our competitors.” – the French manager concluded.
For Ferrari fans, the hope is that this extra month of refinement will allow the SF-26 to shed its “second-best” tag and take the fight directly to the Mercedes W17. With the 2026 power unit battle proving so tight, these delayed aerodynamic refinements could be the deciding factor in whether Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton can secure the Scuderia’s first win of this new technical era. The countdown to Miami has officially begun, and the stakes for the Maranello technical office couldn’t be higher.
