Extreme wings and new sidepods for a massive update to the Ferrari SF-23: it starts in the Netherlands and then all-in at Monza.
A taste in the Netherlands, then a revolution at Monza. This is the plan that Diego Tondi, head of aerodynamics for the Scuderia, intends to follow in continuing the development of the SF-23.
At Zandvoort, especially due to the factory shutdown during the summer break, the updates will be limited. According to reports from the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, an updated version of the floor will be introduced in the Netherlands, along with some minor modifications.
The revolution, as mentioned, will happen at Monza. In reality, according to some rumors, it appears that the massive package of updates planned for the Italian Grand Prix weekend could be tested, albeit in a single instance, during the practice sessions at Zandvoort.
New wings: Studying Red Bull’s “super DRS”
It all starts with the wings. To cope with the extreme speeds of the Monza circuit, Ferrari is working on a new version of low downforce wings with an extreme profile. It’s likely to be an evolution, particularly in the area where the flap connects to the endplate, of the effective rear wing introduced in Belgium, albeit in an even more tapered configuration.
While the upper part of the wing will be similar to what was seen at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, the main evolution will concern the area of the beam wing, located on the underside. The Maranello aerodynamic team has focused specifically on the relationship between the aerodynamic load generated by the upper and lower profiles. This, incidentally, is the concept underlying Red Bull’s “super DRS,” a subject of study at Ferrari for some time now.

The revolution through the sidepods
The main modification, which almost seems like a revolution for the SF-23, concerns the sidepods. At Monza, the third specification of the sidepods introduced in Barcelona will make its debut. This particular version will feature a lower reshaping to increase the section of the channel that separates them from the floor, allowing airflow to pass through, which would increase the generated downforce.
In general, these updates will have a dual objective. As Fred Vasseur has repeatedly emphasized, the development of the SF-23 will continue as long as it benefits next year’s car. Simultaneously, Ferrari has shown a rather fluctuating trend in the early part of the 2023 Formula One season, despite positive signs in recent races, particularly in Belgium.
Hence, the package of updates that will be divided between Zandvoort and Monza will aim to confirm improvements and secure Ferrari’s position as the second force in the remainder of the championship.
