Loic Serra, Ferrari’s technical director, has spoken about the possibility of grey areas within the 2026 regulations, hinting at the so-called “engine case” involving Mercedes and Red Bull.
Recent rumors about a potential engine advantage for Mercedes and Red Bull have reignited the debate surrounding the grey areas embedded in the 2026 technical regulations. Should the FIA decide to give the green light to the two power units that have been widely discussed in recent days, a true “political war” could emerge within the paddock, characterized by protests, counter-protests and formal appeals between rival teams.
Serra steps in to defend
Despite this scenario, within the Ferrari environment there are voices that appear to defend the solutions developed by rival engineers, praising their creative approach. “What we define as ‘grey areas’ are, in reality, nothing more than examples of creativity linked to the ability to think of things that no one has ever thought of before,” Loic Serra stated, clearly referring to the possibility of seeing solutions that sit right on the edge of regulatory legality.
Ferrari’s technical director then went on to discuss what he expects in terms of the competitive hierarchy on the grid. “I think the overall picture will not be turned upside down too much. At the beginning everyone will try to explore different directions, and this could lead to concepts that are not fully convergent. But there is still room, there is always room in Formula 1. Every week someone comes up with a new idea that nobody had thought of before. And this happens in every team,” added the former Mercedes engineer during the end-of-year team lunch.
As the countdown to 2026 continues, Loic Serra’s perspective highlights a crucial shift in Maranello’s philosophy: a move away from the courtroom and toward the drawing board. By embracing the inevitability of technical loopholes, Ferrari is signaling that they are ready to fight fire with fire, trusting their own technical department to find the “creative” edges necessary to return to the top. In a sport where a fraction of a second is the difference between a world title and a missed opportunity, the battle of wits between the engineers at Maranello, Brackley, and Milton Keynes is only just beginning.
