By now, last year’s agreement between the FIA and Ferrari is no longer a mystery. The Scuderia now only has to think about looking ahead and moving in the right direction in view of 2022, but where are we? The GrandPrix247 website has made a very interesting analysis in this regard.
If we think about where Ferrari was in the last 3 years we would surely have expected a different 2020 Formula 1 championship for the red team. Some performances such as those at SPA in 2018 and Monza in 2019 will remain for a long time in the heart of the Ferrari fansi, but in the last year history has changed. Worse.
Taking into account 8 circuits (Red Bull Ring, Hungaroring, Silverstone, Catalunya, SPA, Monza, Sochi, Bahrain and Yas Marina) present every year from 2014 to today and analyzing the laps in qualifying, the Ferrari 2020 picture is tragic. The Maranello team last season at SPA was slower than in 2017, and was only a tenth better in Bahrain than 4 seasons ago. Qualifying times in Austria, Monza, Abu Dhabi and Spain were slower than in 2018.
If, on the other hand, we take into account the performance of Mercedes, we come to the conclusion that in 2020 Ferrari in qualifying was on average 1,381 seconds slower than Mercedes. An average performance even worse than in 2014. It is practically as if the engineers of Maranello had lost 5 years of work.
As Mattia Binotto has already confirmed, Scuderia Ferrari is working hard to close the gap, but it will certainly not be easy. For now, the feelings about 2021 and the new engine are positive, and good improvements are expected compared to the SF1000 car. SF21 will be unveiled on March 10, ahead of pre-season testing in Bahrain.
