As recently reported by the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Scuderia Ferrari is pushing ahead with its F1-75 car development program for the 2022 Formula One season with the goal of giving Charles Leclerc every opportunity of regaining the lead in the world championship ahead of the summer break, with the help of some aero updates for the next race and most importantly an updated power unit which should be introduced at Silverstone.
The development, that Ferrari should bring to the track at the British Grand Prix in a few weeks’ time, is reportedly an upgrade of the electronic or ‘hybrid’ parts which should further improve the already impressive new 2022 Ferrari power unit.
Regarding the next race, in Azerbaijan, there will reportedly also be minor upgrades for the F1-75 car in Baku this weekend, mostly track specific, followed by more important aerodynamic upgrades seven days later when Formula 1 goes to Canada for the Montreal event at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps after the summer break.
La Gazzetta dello Sport provided further details on the engine side, as the electrical upgrade for Silverstone is “the only (power unit) area where improvements can still be made under the FIA regulations. It’s not just about horsepower but also reliability, where developments are allowed.” – the Italian newspaper informs.
Charles Leclerc, however, is running out of allowed MGU-H units so that “If Ferrari replaces the component before Silverstone, it could result in a grid penalty when the evolved version of the power unit is introduced”. – they point out.
According to Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko, the power units used by Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull this season are all close together in terms of performance: “The strange engine power advantage with Lewis Hamilton’s engine last year – I don’t think that’s the case anymore,” the Austrian said in an interview for formel1.de.

At the same time Helmut Marko believes Lewis Hamilton and especially George Russell will be more competitive in the second part of the season and could join the fight with Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull once Mercedes will be able to find more consistency: “They just don’t do this consistently. That makes it difficult to estimate where that laptime comes from. However, when I listen to Mercedes, I get the impression that they don’t know that themselves either,” said Marko – “The only thing that’s dangerous is that the potential is definitely there at Mercedes. If they manage to get more out of the equipment than they do now, they could be back to the front of the grid.” – he concluded.
